Centralia, Pennsylvania was never a particularly large community, but it was once a lively and industrial place. At its peak the coal mining town was home to 2,761 souls, but today the population of its cemeteries far outnumbers that of its living residents. The series of events which led to the community’s demise– slowly diminishing its numbers to less than a dozen– began about forty-four years ago. In 1963, workers set a heap of trash ablaze in an abandoned mine pit which was used as the borough’s landfill. The burning of excess trash was a common practice, yet at that particular time and place there existed a dangerous condition: an exposed vein of anthracite coal. The highly flammable mineral was unexpectedly ignited by the trash fire, prompting a quick effort to put it out. The flames on the surface were successfully extinguished, but unbeknownst to the fire fighters, the coal continued to burn underground. Over the following weeks it rapidly migrated into the surrounding coal mines and beneath the town, causing great concern.
Soon the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources began monitoring the fire by drilling holes into the earth to determine the extent and temperature of the fire. In retrospect, it was realized that the well-meaning workers may have unwittingly provided the fire with a natural draft by drilling these boreholes, feeding the coal’s combustion. As a precaution, the Department also installed gas monitors in many homes within the affected area, but nonetheless many residents complained of symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure.
In 1969– seven years after the fire was started– a more involved effort was made to contain the fire using trenches and clay seals, but the attempt was met with failure. In the 1970s, concerns over the severity of the extensive subterranean fire were stirred when a gas station owner noticed that the contents of his underground fuel storage tank seemed hot, so he measured the gasoline’s temperature, and found it to be a troubling 180 degrees Fahrenheit.
Numerous attempts were made to extinguish or contain the underground fire over the next two decades. The mines were flushed with water and the burning coal was excavated, but despite the persistence of the workers, their efforts were unsuccessful. The work continued for years at a great expense, with no appreciable progress.
After burning beneath the surface for almost twenty years, the fire drew national media attention when the ground crumbled beneath the feet of twelve-year-old Todd Domboski in 1981. The sinkhole– about four feet wide and 150 feet deep– had sufficient heat and carbon monoxide concentration that it would have killed the boy had his cousin had not been there to help pull him to safety. It was not the first nor the last sinkhole caused by the fire, but it was the most sobering.
At that point, about seven million dollars had been spent in the firefighting effort. Experts determined that the only option remaining to effectively battle the fire would be a massive trenching operation, at the cost of about $660 million, with no guarantee of success. Left with such limited options, the state of Pennsylvania basically condemned the entire town, and spent $42 million in government funds relocating most of its residents.
The fire still burns today beneath about four hundred acres of surface land, and it’s still growing. There is enough coal in the eight-mile vein to feed the fire for up to two hundred and fifty years, but it may burn itself out in as few as one hundred years. A few residents remained in the borough after the buyout, but their numbers have dwindled since then to about a dozen. Most of the unoccupied homes and buildings have been razed, and large portions of the town are being reclaimed by nature, leaving meadows crisscrossed with overgrown asphalt roads and the occasional steaming or smoking hillside.
In its prime, Centralia was a vibrant community with five hotels, seven churches, nineteen general stores, two jewelry stores, and about twenty-six saloons. Today it is a modern ghost town whose guts have been burned out, and whose main path of ingress has been closed and detoured. Residents are expected to return in 2016 to open a time capsule which was buried in the town in 1966, back when the town’s future was still somewhat optimistic. Its future now is decidedly more grim… There are currently no further plans to extinguish the fire, and most modern maps no longer show a dot where Centralia once stood.

Notice from Enfamil
So as we all know, there was a death of a 10 day old baby recently and it had been linked to Enfamil Newborn formula. So this is what I got in my email today:
Dear GLENDA, With the recent media attention to infant formula, we want to make sure that you—as a member of the Enfamil® Family Beginnings™ program—know that trust in Enfamil products is well placed. We are completely confident that Enfamil PREMIUM® Newborn formula and all the other products we manufacture are safe. That's because every single batch of Enfamil formula undergoes approximately 2,300 individual quality and safety tests before being shipped from our warehouse. Our high standard of quality and safety is one you can continue to trust for your baby. It's one of the many reasons that Enfamil is the #1 pediatrician-recommended formula brand. Like you, we were deeply saddened recently to learn of the death of a newborn boy in Missouri. The boy tested positive for Cronobacter (Enterobacter sakazakii), a strain of bacteria found throughout the environment. We test all of our formulas for Cronobacter prior to releasing them for sale. We can say with confidence that the testing of the Enfamil Newborn batch associated with the baby in Missouri did not show any presence of this bacteria. But even though we were entirely confident of our product's safety, we didn't want to leave it at that. We wanted to reassure you of the safety of our products. So we performed additional scientific testing last week on samples from the same batch of formula used by the boy's family. Those repeat tests did not show any presence of Cronobacter. The attention to quality and safety that comes with our 100-year legacy of trust is one you can count on. Every batch of Enfamil formula meets—and often exceeds—our own high safety and quality standards, and those set by regulatory bodies including the World Health Organization and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). You can continue to be confident about placing trust in every one of our products. As a reminder, it is important to properly handle formula when feeding your baby. Every package of Enfamil contains instructions for easily and safely preparing and using the product, including proper hygiene, preparation, dilution, use and storage. We encourage you to review and follow these instructions. We encourage you to contact us any time you have questions about Mead Johnson Nutrition products.
Sincerely, Enfamil Brands Mead Johnson Nutrition |

Baby dies after bacterial infection from Enfamil
Wal-Mart says it has recalled a quantity of infant formula this week after a baby died in Missouri.
"We extend our deepest condolences to this baby boy's family as they try to come to grips with their loss," said Dianna Gee, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman. " As soon as we heard what happened, we immediately reached out to the manufacturer of the formula and to the Department of Health and Senior Services to provide any information we may have to help with the investigation."
Wal-Mart said it is pulled a batch of Enfamil from its stores nationwide that matched the size and lot number of the formula that may have sickened the baby in Missouri, Gee said. That lot number is ZP1K7G. The baby formula was purchased from a Wal-Mart in Lebanon, Missouri. After the purchase a 10-day-old infant died from a rare bacterial infection.
Avery Cornett was taken to St. John’s Hospital-Lebanon late last week after appearing lethargic and displaying what his family said were signs of a stomach ache. He was later moved to St. John’s Hospital-Springfield, and preliminary tests showed that he had contracted a rare bacterial infection, Cronobacter sakazakii. He died Sunday after being removed from life support.
The government has not ordered a recall of the 12.5-ounce cans of Enfamil Newborn powder.
Authorities are running tests to determine if the death came from the formula, the water to make the formula or any other factor, said Mead Johnson Nutrition, the company that makes Enfamil."We are highly confident in the safety and quality of our products -- and the rigorous testing we put them through," said Chris Perille, a Mead Johnson Nutrition spokesman. He said its records showed the lot tested negative for the bacterium before it was shipped.

You smoke? You're fired!
The jobs of three EVAC employees with more than 30 years of combined experience are up in smoke after they were found in violation of the county's nicotine policy, a county spokesman confirmed Saturday.
But the three fired county employees say they believe they should be offered a second chance.
"I was terminated for something I do at home and is perfectly legal," said Mike Stone, who had worked as a paramedic for EVAC for 5 1/2 years.
In October, the private EVAC was taken over by Volusia County, meaning all its employees had to pass a blood test showing they were nicotine free. All EVAC employees are on workplace probation for six months, so they don't have the same rights as full-fledged employees.
Because the policy violations occurred during the probationary period, the terminated employees cannot appeal the decision with the county.
EVAC started hiring only nonsmokers in 2010, similar to the practice observed by the county for all uniformed personnel. The county policy not to employ smokers started with new, special risk hires for the county fire services in 1989. Those hired before the policy took effect were grandfathered in.
The three EVAC employees acknowledged Saturday they made mistakes.
"I think it's a little unfair," said 59-year-old Henry Roverano. "I know I broke the rules, but I think I should be given a second chance."
Roverano, who had worked with EVAC for 21 years, said he quit smoking Sept. 6, so he could pass the county's blood test.
But the former lead paramedic said he succumbed to temptation after he started going through family problems near the end of November -- smoking about 20 cigarettes in a two-week period. He said he quit again, though, feeding his addiction using nicotine lozenges.
Roverano said he was randomly tested Dec. 7 and the results came back positive for cotinine, an indicator of nicotine that can stay in the body for up to a week.
Roverano was fired Friday afternoon.
"I'm flabbergasted," he said. "They said I broke the rules and you're gone."
Stone, 30, said he was randomly tested about three weeks ago. He said he had also been going through a stressful time and snuck a few cigarettes while at home.
He said he was called in by his supervisors Tuesday after failing the test and was terminated.
Erin Blezinski, 39, who was an EVAC paramedic for 6 1/2 years, said she had quit smoking in July. The single mother said she was invited to a bachelorette party and smoked a cigar. Two days later, she was called in for a test.
"I wasn't even worried about it," she said.
Several days later, she was let go.
"I love my job and I love my patients," she said. "But I don't think I'll ever get it back now."
Oh, well, is my reaction. They should have followed the rules.

Elevator crushes NY woman
Suzanne Hart, 41, was killed at a Midtown Manhattan office tower after being crushed when an elevator at the building rose suddenly, according to the New York Fire Department.
Hart stepped onto an elevator in the lobby of 285 Madison Ave. and was pinned when it went up, said Jim Long, a spokesman for the department. Two other people were uninjured and are being treated for what they witnessed, he said.
She was “mangled up really bad,” a fire official said.

The building, located between 40th and 41st streets, is owned by WPP Plc (WPP)’s Young & Rubicam advertising firm, according to New York City property records. Chris Hayes, a spokesperson for Young & Rubicam, didn’t immediately return a phone call seeking comment. The company earlier this month announced it was moving offices to 3 Columbus Circle.
Records show 56 violations of the city’s building code involving some of the building's 13 elevators, dating back to 2001. The last citation occurred in 2009, and all of the complaints are listed as resolved by the city Buildings Department.Tuesday, December 13, 2011
South Korean Towers insult?
The unveiling of pictures of planned luxury residential towers scheduled to be built in Seoul, South Korea, has sparked instant controversy. The reason is obvious. The towers, which include a so-called “cloud” feature connecting them around the 27th floors, clearly resemble the World Trade Towers in the process of collapsing following the 9/11 attacks.
The designers of the towers, Dutch architectural firm MVRDV, have responded to the controversy by quickly publishing an apology in English. “It was not our intention to create an image resembling the attacks,” the designers insist, “nor did we see the resemblance during the design process.”
They did not see the resemblance during the design process? Really? They have admitted the contrary in Dutch. Thus Jan Knikker of MVRDV told the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad, “I have to admit that we also thought of the 9/11 attacks.”
Intentional or not? What do you think?

The real Silent Hill
For gamers, you immediately knew what I was talking about. Before being made into a movie, Silent Hill was first a creepy video game that would send chills down your spine. Well guess what? There is a real Silent Hill! Yup! It's called Centralia, PA. This place actually gave the producers of the movie, somewhere to base their film on. In researching the different elements of Silent Hill, screenwriter Roger Avary (Killing Zoe, The Rules of Attraction) came across the town of Centralia, Pennsylvania.
There is a small town in Pennsylvania called Ashland where Route 61′s northbound traffic is temporarily branched onto a short detour. Exactly what the detour is circumventing is not immediately clear to travelers, however few passers-by pay it any mind… a detour is nothing unusual. But anyone who ignores the detour and ventures along the original route 61 highway will soon encounter an abrupt and unexplained road closure. Beyond it lies a town filled with overgrown streets, smoldering earth, and ominous warning signs. It is the remains of the borough of Centralia.

More info released on phone
A source close to the Michelle Parker investigation says that Michelle Parker's phone was found by a dive team in the Belle Isle area.
The phone was found in the water beneath the bridge that crosses over Lake Conway, near an area where Little Lake Conway and Lake Conway meet, the source said. Police said Thursday morning that the missing mom's phone was found in "remarkably good condition."
Police said Parker's family identified the phone as hers. In addition, they confirmed the match using the phone's serial number.“Seeing that, it gives me hope that even after so many days, you can still find something," Parker's sister, Lauren Erickson, said Wednesday night. Erickson said that even though time is passing and it seems like nothing is happening, she is hopeful that her sister's case is going to be solved.

Universal Studios "Jaws" will close down
Officials at Universal Orlando announced Friday they're planning to close the "Jaws" attraction.
Now to those of us that have visited Universal Studios, this is a deep sadness that we are feeling. This is a much loved attraction to people, especially those that are old enough to remember seeing the movie growing up! They better not ever remake this one!
"JAWS" will be closed permanently at 9 p.m. on Jan. 2, 2012, as well as the Amity area."We must always work to provide new, innovative entertainment experiences for our guests," Universal officials said in a statement. "We know "Jaws" holds a special place in the hearts of our guests, and we have put a great deal of thought and care into this decision."

Rape victim pardoned because she marries rapist!
Afghan President Hamid Karzai pardoned an Afghan woman Thursday who was serving a 12-year prison sentence for having sex out of wedlock after she was raped by a relative. Ohhhh, how kind of him!
Karzai's office said in a statement that the woman and her attacker have agreed to marry. That would reverse an earlier decision by the 19-year-old woman, who had previously refused a judge's offer of freedom if she agreed to marry the rapist.
Her plight was highlighted in a documentary that the European Union blocked because it feared the women featured in the film would be in danger if it were shown.
More than 5,000 people recently signed a petition urging Karzai to release the woman. She had the man's child while in prison and raised her daughter behind bars, which is common among women imprisoned in Afghanistan.
A statement released by Karzai's office says that after hearing from judicial officials, the decision was made to forgive the rest of the sentence she received for having sex out of wedlock, a crime in Afghanistan. My goodness! You know sometimes we take things for granted! Imagine how we would be living if we had to marry our rapists!
The woman told The Associated Press last month that she had hoped that attention generated by the EU film might help her get released.
With the film blocked, she said, she was losing hope and considering marrying her rapist as a way out. She said her attacker was pressuring her to stop giving interviews.
About half of the 300 to 400 women jailed in Afghanistan are imprisoned for "moral crimes" such as sex outside marriage, according to reports by the United Nations and research organizations. This pisses me off!!!! These "men" are such idiots! This is why some women are featured on "Snapped". Because of assholes like these!

Michelle's body may have been found
A sheriff's spokesman in Camden County, Ga., acknowledged that a body found Wednesday night near a south Georgia Interstate 95 on-ramp could be that of missing Orlando woman Michelle Parker, according to First Coast News.
Spokesman William Terrell said it's too early to speculate, but he confirmed that the body found off Exit 14 is believed to be that of a white female, the report said. The body, which Camden County Sheriff Tommy Gregory said had been there for some time, will be taken to Macon for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Terrell said that there are no missing persons in Camden County who are unaccounted for, according to First Coast News.
Late Wednesday evening Michelle's family said that they have spoken to the investigators in Georgia and that the body is not that of Michelle.

Search in new area and kids are taken away
The sheriff's office sent dive teams into Lake Ellenor Wednesday as part of the search for Michelle Parker.
10 to 15 officers were in the area of Sand Lake Road. Underwater teams were also searching Lake Ellenor. The Orlando Police Department is the main agency handling the investigation, but the sheriff's office does not have a dive team.
Lake Ellenor is just south of Oak Ridge Road, between John Young Parkway and Orange Blossom Trail.
A spokesman for the OPD says this search because of a tip they received, it is just part of the investigation.
On Tuesday DCF took Michelle and Dale's kids away from Dale as part of the investigation into Michelle's disappearance. Attorneys for DCF argued the children are not safe with Dale. They cited a history of violence against women he was involved with as evidence of a "significant future risk" to the children. Mark NeJame argued there wasn't any evidence the children are in danger by staying with Dale.
"If this doesn't ring as a testament to a man who is not guilty, I don't know what does," NeJame said. "Mr. Smith wants Michelle found. Now what guilty person is asking for a search to be conducted? If she is found alive or not, he knows that will exonerate him."

Dale's attorney, Mark NeJame said Dale is asking for the missing-persons search group Texas Equusearch to help look for Parker. NeJame said his client is declining to take a lie detector test because it's unreliable and not because he is hiding anything."If this doesn't ring as a testament to a man who is not guilty, I don't know what does," NeJame said. "Mr. Smith wants Michelle found. Now what guilty person is asking for a search to be conducted? If she is found alive or not, he knows that will exonerate him."

Michelle's family hires Morgan & Morgan
The family of missing mom Michelle Parker has retained Morgan and Morgan law firm as representatives to help navigate them through the legal process. That's the same Morgan and Morgan from The Zenaida case. Yes, I must admit that from seeing their ads on TV even before the Casey Anthony case, I always said if I needed legal advise, I would go for them!
One day after police named Michelle Parker's ex-fiancé the prime suspect in her disappearance, new details have emerged about the missing mother of three's relationship with Dale Smith II, and the couple's violent past.
According to public records, the couple was involved in a domestic violence case involving children in 2009. Parker and Smith have 3-year-old twins together.
Public records also showed Smith was previously convicted on drug and domestic battery charges.
Smith joined the U.S. Marines in 1996, but was dishonorably discharged as a private in 2003.
Police said Smith is their only suspect in his former fiancée's disappearance.
Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney said Smith would not take a lie detector test when asked.
Parker's mother and sister stood with Rooney during Monday's announcement, and are now begging Smith to come forward with answers.
"If you made a mistake and it was just a second of 'Oh, I lost my head,' or whatever, and you didn't know what to do, our family needs to have Michelle home. We need to heal," said Michelle Stewart, Parker's mother.
"We want to ask him, if he's out there watching, and I want to say to him directly: Help us," said Lauren Erickson, Parker's sister. "If you know something, let her be a mother to her children. Work with us. That's all we're asking -- for you to work with us and come forward, and if there's anything that you know, that you're holding back, please just work, just help us."
Dale Smith has hired prominent Orlando attorney Mark NeJame to represent him. NeJame used to represent George and Cindy Anthony.

Dad shoves 3 year old into washer as punishment
Christophe Champenois, from Meaux, near Paris is a complete asshole who failed as a father. This 33-year-old man took the clothing off his 3-year-old son Bastien, and placed him in the washing machine because he threw a classmates drawing in the toilet. Apparently time outs were not something he was familiar with, and this seemed like a better form of punishment. I mean, if this was your solution, you might as well just beat the child; At least that way he’d still be alive and just resent you for being a piece of shit.
He is then said to have run the cold cycle wash for a few minutes at their house, in the village of Germigny-l’Eveque.
His 25-year-old mother, Charlene was the one who had to recover her blond-haired angelic baby boy in the machine. He had apparently died of head injuries on Friday night, which were a result of his father’s punishment. Sadly, the mother told her neighbor ‘Alice’ that her son had fallen down the stairs. Why the fuck would she cover for her baby’s father after finding her poor innocent child dead?!Alice told Le Parisien: ‘I picked him up and his limbs were as loose as those of a rag doll.
‘I felt his heart beat for the last time and then he died.’
Bastien’s older sister Maud, 5, told police that this hadn’t been the first time his father had put him in the washing machine to punish him. It’s pathetic that a 5-year-old girl has to share how her brother was abused, yet alone, witness the abuse.Neighbours told the newspaper that the boy had been repeatedly abused – by being locked up for hours in a cupboard and also by being left on a window sill for hours wrapped in a blanket.
Bastien was an unwanted child’, claimed Evelyne, his grandmother.
‘On the day he was born, his father was out drinking and when I told him he had a son, he said that he didn’t want him.’
So why disn't the family members that CARED take this sweet little boy away!!!!! That poor child!!!! There IS something called adoption!!!!!

Suspect named in Michelle's disappearance!
Police have officially named Michelle Parker's ex-fiancee, Dale Smith Jr, as the primary suspect in the woman's disappearance.
Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney made the announcement Monday afternoon at a news conference."We had to look at every aspect in the case before we could come out publicly and state that Mr. Smith is our primary focus."
Dale Smith declined to take a polygraph test. Police have no plans to arrest Smith at this point. Police believe he was the last person to see Parker alive.
In regards to the raid on Smith's father's house, Michelle's dad said, "For them to use tear gas on that, they had to have a good tip or lead. I'm keeping an open mind. I don't know who it is. Maybe Dale should come out here and support. I don't know if he's scared."
The $50,000 reward leading to Michelle's finding expired last night at midnight.

Police raid home in search for michelle
Even though I feel like I'm dying from this cold and I'm typing on my iPhone in bed I will still update you guys on what's going on in the search for Michelle Parker.
SWAT teams tear-gassed a home, where Parker's ex-boyfriend stays, and went inside. The home is on Rose Boulevard, off of South Texas Avenue. That's just east of John Young Parkway.
Police only said they are searching for "a piece of the puzzle" on where they might find her.
Orlando police said no one was arrested in the raid, however neighbors claim everyone was taken out of the home and someone was put into a patrol car.
According to Orange County property records, the home is registered to "Dale Smith Senior." Michelle Parker's ex-fiance's father. Parker's family said Dale Smith Jr. lives in the home.
"They had reason to search the house. They searched the house, they didn't come up with what they were looking for," Erickson said. "The SWAT team was there, They had dogs there and they didn't come up with nothing."
The Parker family has said in the past they don't think Smith had anything to do with the disappearance.

"Hey Dad, It's about 8:40 just giving you a shout on Wednesday morning. I know you are at work. Call me when you have lunch or a break or at the end of your day. Ok? I love you. I'll talk to you soon bye."
Michelle's friends and family were hoping for a Thanksgiving miracle and she that she would be found. Says her mother, Yvonne, "Michelle is always in charge of the sweet potato casserole. Michelle is awesome. She likes to cook. She likes to bake. She loves to be around the family."
Brad Parker, her father says "When she calls ‘Hey Daddy,’ I say ‘how much money you need.’ It's Thanksgiving. I'm gonna save this forever."

Will Michelle be found soon?
Police and family have released a new photo of Michelle Parker who has been missing a week on Thursday. Her mom says last week she was looking forward to eating mashed potatoes and gravy but this week she just wants to have her baby home. She is finding new hope in a newly released photo of Michelle in a yellow top with a cross necklace. She may have been wearing that necklace when she disappeared.
Police say right now there is no evidence that a crime has been committed so they are focusing their attention on finding Michelle and not suspects. Michelle's boyfriend also says that Michelle is a grounded girl that wouldn't just take off and leave. Her ex-fiancee has also been cooperating with authorities and has been taking care of the 3 year old twins he shares with Michelle. Police and family will be searching throughout the holiday and are looking for volunteers.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Orlando Police Department at 321-235-5300
